Sha'uri inspired the rebellion. Awesome, awesome woman.
No one knew how to read - it was forbidden to everyone on Abydos, not just women - so the question, of course, is how Sha'uri knew how to teach Daniel? There's some lovely fanon out there (and I wish I could remember who first suggested it) that there was a quiet, subversive tradition among the elder women of each generation, choosing a few female acolytes to whom they passed down the secret forbidden knowledge of reading. It's more likely that Sha'uri couldn't read at all; when she showed Daniel the symbols, he was muttering out loud to himself, and she caught enough fragments to recognize it as something similar to her own language. She started correcting his pronounciation, but she didn't match the sounds with the symbols until Daniel pointed at each one in turn and asked for it.
Whichever theory is the right one, it's unquestionably true that Sha'uri dared to draw symbols in the sand for Daniel, even when she assumed he was Ra's emissary. She took him to the catacombs with their hidden story - and they had to shove stones out of their way, so it's clear that she was one of a very few who knew it existed. And when Daniel and Jack and the others were taken, and the city of Nagada was bombed, Sha'uri was the one who showed Skaara and the boys their history and demanded that they stand up and fight.
Erm. Yeah. You might notice I like the woman, just a tad... :)
If you're interested, I have a rather detailed essay on Sha'uri, as portrayed in the movie, over here (http://community.livejournal.com/redial_the_gate/4773.html).
