I've never seen the practice applied to characters, just real people. That bothers me less, although it is equally... precious. ;)

Yeah, the real people thing is a later development I think. In my recollection it had been going on for some time in connection with television before it bled into RL with things like TomKat or Brangelina.

McShep doesn't bother me so much for SGA-dom. But I don't think I use any others, and barely use that.
