So, I have my eye on the brand new MacbookPro laptop. I like macs, I've wanted a laptop for ages, and it looks pretty spiffy. Plus since I work for a university, I can order for a slightly less expensive price. They have financing so I can pay on the installment plan.

The Cons:

-I really probably shouldn't take on anything else like this while I'm still making car payments.
-I'd have a system that would allow me to sign up for broadband internet. I'd have an internet connection at home again. I'd be paying out another $30.00 or so a month. (There's actually a mixture of pro and con there.)
-While it's inconvenient to not have an up to date computer and printer at home, it's not essential. It's not like I'm not getting along without it.

The Pros:

-The main pro that I have going right now is me saying in an oh so mature way over and over, "but I want it.

Guess which argument is currently the most compelling one? Yeah, sometimes I have some trouble making decisions in an adult way.

well, wanting it is not a BAD thing. but maybe do what I do sometimes when I really want something, but am concerned over the budget impact:

I give myself a time frame to think about it. I promise I won't buy it before the time period (say a week/a month/3 months -whatever seems appropriate) is up. During that time period I will try to note the times that I would actually have USED the item and garnered enjoyment or easier work or whatever positive from it. I will then weigh that against the effects (opportunity cost) of having given up the income so I could have the item. I will consider the things I would not have been able to do to pay for the big ticket item, and I will try to figure out if the cost would be worth it in the short term and the long term.

Usually by the end of the time period, I know REALLY clearly whether or not it would be worth buying the item. And sometimes the want, even after the waiting period, outweighs everything else, and usually, that means the item is worth getting.

Anyway, for what it's worth!

That's an excellent suggestion!

Wow. That's a lot of thinkin'.

Being indecisive and then just not doing anything is just so much "easier"!

*sigh*

oh, no worries - that is actually my more COMMON method. ;) But then I make it sound all organized like, in retrospect, by saying I was CONSIDERiNG it ;).

Raithen's points are all good ones, and I follow a very similar plan (unless I don't wanna wait...) but I would say Buy the Mac! I adore mine (Powerbook G4, bought the same week they announced the Intel move...) My father said I'd sleep with it if I thought I could get away with it. He's not totally wrong...

Hee! It's always nice to have enablers around. ;) Also nice to hear good words about the Mac Book family.

I cannot help on the mac pro con discussion, except that I can empathize with similar discussions.

I just wanted to say I love your Snoopy icon! (((hugs Snoopy)))
