where the wild things are

In all the excitement over the election events, I forgot about posting this yesterday.

The building where I work happens to be located adjacent to a small area that remains undeveloped and still somewhat wooded. (Hopefully it will remain that way for many years to come.) What this means is that even though we're in town and located near a quite busy street, there's also interesting wildlife about.

There are, of course, the ever-present squirrels and rabits. A pretty good variety of birds stop by to snack at the bird feeders that a couple of employees have set up. In the evenings, the deer come out. On at least one occasion we've a whole gaggle of deer around the feeders, nudging them and eating the seeds that had fallen to the ground. I've also seen a fox, although it's been several years since that sighting. And a coyote once.

There have also been many reported sightings of a bobcat by other employees. I finally saw it for the first time a few weeks ago when it wandered around the building. Which of course led to most of the staff going from window to window following its movement.

Then, yesterday morning, the bobcat returned. We were all happily watching it move around some of the shrubbery. It was so adorable that you just wanted to go out and scoop it up in your arms. (Note: I wouldn't advise actually trying to do such a thing.) Then all of the sudden a juvenile bobcat came into sight. While all looked at it, a second one emerged. And then a third came into view. I'm theorizing that Mama Bobcat was taking her cubs on a field trip/hunting lesson. It was pretty neat.

Whoa. I think that means you should all be very careful when outside, lest you become a cautionary tale on "When Animals Attack!" *snerk*

I think our racoons have finally left, which makes me less worried that they will gang up, surround us, and steal the baby.

What? The mama racoon totally stole my stepmom's cellphone in May. If she'd been able to keep it, she would totally kidnap Leander, raise him feral, and make him order pizza for them later.

:-D

Yeah, the cell phone was probably a dry run while they work up to the big prize: someone with opposable thumbs who can handle some of the more intricate tasks. ;)

How cool! I'm pretty sure that we don't have bobcats here (although one of my cats looks like a little tiny bobcat). They are such fine cats. I'd love to see one in the wild - and to see a whole family! How wonderful!

I'd never actually seen one until recently. I'd kind of thought that they were a little bigger than they are. They're bigger than a very large domestic cat, but not by much it doesn't seem. They were fascinating to watch.

That's awesome! Especially that you were able to actually witness it.

We have lots of deer at my workplace, but last month we had a mountain lion "scare" (no one saw it in person, but it appeared a couple of times on the security cameras during the early dawn hours). We were banned from walking outside the main grounds, and they moved our shuttle dropoff point until they were sure it had moved on. Most of us were just disappointed we never actually saw it in person, but we keep looking for it.

Every once in awhile we get these little wildlife shows. We've had fauns cross our grounds too. It does make for a nice diversion. :)

There've been rumors about a mountain lion in the area too, but no one has ever seemed to turn up reliable proof of them.

Awwwww! Bobcat field trip!

And yeah... I'd want to scoop it up and love on it, too. Animals should just be able to sense people who don't want to harm them. We should secrete a pheremone!
