this 'n that
Sep. 16th, 2005 01:47 pmEarlier this summer I made some comments regarding fandom using Stargate SG-1 and I think used the TWoP forums as an example. In an interesting twist, shortly after that I delurked at the SG-1 forum there and have been having a splendid time. Go figure. I wish, though, that weren't finding this season of SG1 so ponderous. I don't think that it's just that I'm missing my favorite character, though I do miss Jack a lot. I think I'm capable of letting new things happen. But as I've commented over there, they've managed to introduce a new villain that's both threatening and boring. It's unfortunate. I'm not hating this season, but I'm not finding it particularly engaging either. Maybe the second half will pick up.
Also, I've been watching early Buffy. A few observations:
1. I don't think I like early Xander very much. I very much like what Xander grew up to be. Season 1 Xander comes across to me as petulant and kinda hypocritical about what he wants his relationship to Buffy to be in comparison to how he treats Willow. In some ways, I think Buffy is a lot more respectful to Xander and his crush on her than Xander is of Willow's crush on him.
2. Just about any scene between Buffy and Giles is gold. Whether in synch or at odds, those two characters really worked well together.
3. I happened to see part of Lie to Me (one of my all time favorites) on FX this morning. It was a little frustrating and distracting to see all of the best lines cut out for the syndication version. Syndication manages to be both good and evil at the same time. Good, because it keeps a show alive on the airwaves. Evil, because they cut things for more commercial time and always seem to manage to cut the one thing that makes a scene unique, or fun, or complete. One of the things cut out of this airing was Ford agreeing when Buffy concludes a diatribe with an expression of the dorkiness of one of the wannabe vampires clothing. There should be a law against that sort of thing.
