All Things Considered did an absolutely fascinating piece on FM radio stations and a couple of stations that are moving away from the current format of pigeon-holed music, obnoxious djs, and endless contests. One can only hope that it's a trend that will wind up really catching on. The link to NPR's site is here. The audio should be up later this evening.

I listen to the San Diego station mentioned in the piece. Well, mostly I listen to NPR, but when I want music I listen to 94.9 (KBZT). Recently Michael Feldman's show was in San Diego and one of the DJ's from 94.9 was on the show (she's a singer, too).

We have another non-standard, mostly independant station in San Diego, too. They play everything from blues to classic rock to new stuff. These two stations, KPBS (our public radio), and 2 golden oldies stations make up most of my presets... not that I've preset any stations in my new car yet....!

*sigh* I listened to that today and felt a deep, deep envy for those living in San Diego and Denver.

I'm thinking about sending a transcript of the piece to every radio station in town.
