So I saw Serenity last night. (Whoops, almost typed Firefly).

I would estimate that there were probably between 30 and 40 people in the theater. But everyone there seemed to be into it. There seemed to be good laughter at all the appropriate places. I think I might want to see it again.

In the first third or so of the movie I felt like some things were a little rushed, direction-wise. I'm not sure what I mean, except that I think maybe he could have taken his time a little bit more with some of the shots. That's the extent of my technical film commentary, some things could have been more lingery.

As to the movie itself, I liked it. I thought it was a good story, with good dialogue, humor, and pathos. I had accidentally spoiled myself about the possibility of Book and Wash dying. I don't know if that was why, but for some reason I thought both of the deaths lacked a little resonance. Maybe because I wasn't sure it was going to happen, but kept waiting for it, and when it did it didn't affect as much as I expected. It's entirely likely that upon a rewatch I'll be more "in the moment" at those times. I know that when the movie ended, I felt a loss that both of those characters were gone.

I kept thinking that eventually River is bound to step up and save the day, but I thought it was nicely done the way it worked out. I like how she's unpredictable, emotionally fragile, and has the capacity to be a killing machine, she's not psychotic or a sociopath. Violence and killing isn't something that's fun for her. I think there are so many layers that could yet be explored with that character. I also kept thinking as she was taking on all of the Reavers at the end how gracefully she moved. It was kind of lovely. In a violent, bloody sort of way.
