This weekend I finally rented and watched Spellbound. Everybody else has probably already seen it, but if you haven't, you should. It's really interesting, even gripping. And I don't think that I'll ever look at the National Spelling Bee in quite the same way again.

Not only have I not seen Spellbound, I don't think I've heard of it. Tell a little, please.

It's a documentary that follows eight kids as they qualify and then compete in the National Spelling Bee. The kids they picked to follow were from all over the country and all different backgrounds. It's really interesting to see how hard they prepare for the competition and how much it means and how stressful it can be. There are some points where I started to think that a couple of the parents are putting too much pressure on for success, and then a little farther on my opinion revised when I saw how proud and supportive all of the parents were. And how hard it was on the parents to watch--probably harder for them than for the kids that were competing. And all of the kids that they followed were good, bright kids that obviously have a lot going for them. I really thought it was good viewing.
