Given the decades of "clean your plate! Starving children in (poor country of choice) would love to have that!" we've had in this country, is anyone really surprised that most people eat all of what they're served? It's "rude" to leave food on your plate, after all.
And since potatoes are terrible for blood sugar control, I'm not surprised that people who ate more chips a few hours before dinner ate bigger dinners -- they were probably hungrier!
I wonder if they tried serving non-sugary/non-starchy snacks several hours before for comparison? Hmmmm. Beef jerky or string cheese or something. That would be cool to study.
I really need to find something obvious that people will give me money to discover. *veg*
