I haven't done one in awhile, so just for fun, a poll for Monday. Inspired by memories of a favorite English teacher and her polite but emphatic diatribe against the word "utilize."

[Poll #1186524]

Does anyone happen to know if there's a way to set up a poll so that people can check more than one answer to a question?

ETA: Oops. I just noticed I misspelled seeded. Irony can be kind of ironic sometimes.

Fustrated. Yes, you read that right. There's this part of the population that seems to think that Frustrated only has one R. I want to smack people when they do that.

Also, if you use check boxes instead of radio buttons, people can check more than one box.

*tucks information away for future reference.* Thanks!

I'd also like to add in "flustrated".

No "l" people, no "l".

oh. yes. all of those. Current author is a fan of utilize. *sigh*. Also, she is one of many who doesn't understand the correct punctuation and usage of however....

And I'm sure there is more. but I don't have all day :)

I also get terribly frustated when people utilize the wrong word, irregardless of whether they're well-known to be errors. It was literally drummed into my head in school to not make these errors, but some deep-seeded impulse overrides it, apparently. I think we can take it for granite* that these errors will continue to be common.

*Had to add my own.

Heh. I started to create a poll introduction that used all of the words, then decided that it was too leading. Thanks for doing it for me! :)

I get a little irked at people (especially scientists) using "data" as a singular noun, with "criteria" a close second.

I still bemoan the loss of "agendum".

"For all intensive purposes."

It drives me to the battiness.

Oh, that's a good one. I'm sad that I didn't think of that for the poll.

My purposes are ALWAYS instensive, so I don't know what your problem is. ;)

Also: "for all intensive purposes." What? How does that make sense to anyone??

And I worked at a background check company for three years where EVERYONE said "the search was ran" instead of "the search was run about five million times a day. It made me want to commit homicide.

"the search was ran"

That would drive me nuts. I can just imagine the day that you (or me, or someone) would finally snap and bludgeon someone to death with a stapler after hearing that phrase one too many times.

i hate "literally" used as emphasis and not for a literal meaning. GAH!!!

another one is its/it's -- it drives me crazy when the possessive is written "it's"

but i lovelovelove portmanteau words. we make a lot of them up here, like flusterpated (so frustrated that you're flustered, too). and i love chrissy's adorkable.

Any incorrect Latin plural. I saw "taxons" in a biology textbook a few weeks ago. Sent me up a frakkin' *tree*...

Also: Nucular. Orientate. People who insist pronouncing the first "r" in February.
