The puppy turns one today. So happy birthday Tom. He only singed his whiskers a little bit when he blew out the candle on his cake. (I kid. There were no candles. Or cakes.)

I had a conversation with him while we took our morning walk. I asked him if turning one meant he was a big boy now and he was ready to settle down. He agreed. Then barked and lunged after a passing truck. Yeah, I think that's going to be a work in progress for awhile yet.

Also, he's about 3/4 of the way through blowing his coat. If you've never had a double-coated dog, what that means is that once (or more) a year, the dog completely sheds out his undercoat. It's quite alarming the first time it happens because you pull out fur by the fistful while thinking "this can't be normal." And when they're done, it looks a lot like they've been shaved even though no razor has touched them. He's looking more sleek than fluffy these days.

Mom suspected as much but likes to visit the land of delusion sometimes. ;)

indeed. DeNile is a lovely river to visit from time to time. I personally like to take an airmattress and a fruity drink with a little umbrella, and to really savor my time there ;).

you should get a Furminator (http://www.entirelypets.com/furminator.html)! They're teh AWESOME! I only wish I'd had one when Obie was alive, and I had twice the double-coated doggies to cull fur from. The tines don't touch the skin, so the doggies think they're being petted, but it pulls out tons of fur.

I've looked at those. It was quite the topic of pro and con discussion on my dog list a few weeks ago. It is rather fascinating to pull the tufts out. In kind of the same way that popping bubble wrap is. It's possible that I'm just a dork.

I have a double coated dog. Do you have a rake? Not for the garden but for his coat. It helps get the coat out faster.

On the plus side, the breed rarely needs baths. The coats tend to throw off dirt.

On the downside, though, there are bits of coat all over my living room floor at the moment.
