this 'n' that

1. "Every Day," whether sung by Buddy Holly or James Taylor always makes me smile when I hear it. This morning the Buddy Holly version came up in rotation and I had to listen to it... more than once.
2. The latest fic that I'm working on is going at the blazing speed of approximately three sentences a day. At this rate, I should finish it by Christmas 2009 or so. Actually, I just have to get past the world-building that may or may not need to be jettisoned. And there's some "science" that could probably best be described as being of the *handwave* variety. Then I can get on with the main task of the emotional devastation of Jack. Good times!
3. A friend's post about having to put her dog to sleep took me right back to a year ago when I had to do the same thing. We love every pet that we have, but I think there's almost always one that's extra special. In The Other End of the Leash, Patricia McConnell describes one of her dogs as her dog soulmate. I think that's what Sheba was for me. And what my friend's dog was for her. It's indescribably hard to say goodbye to that.
4. My longevity bonus as a state employee is in today's paycheck. Yay! Sadly, more of than I'd like it going toward buying this year's parking permit. $220.00 for a permit. To park in a lot on West Campus that's rarely even half full. *grumble, grumble* Still, extra cash! I can stop hemorrhaging money--at least for a little while.
