My favorite winter comfort food
Jan. 8th, 2011 01:18 pmis waffles. Well, not so much the waffles as the waffle sauce.* I think this is probably a Low German/Mennonite thing, because I don't know people outside of my extended family who are familiar with this.
1. Waffles--whichever recipe or mix you like to use.
2. Sauce:
3 cups milk
6 tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/8 cup sugar (I usually use somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 cup since I don't have a measuring cup to come up with 3/8
Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until it comes to a boil, until sauce thickens. Or use the microwave. The advantage of the microwave is it's faster and you don't have to worry about the milk scalding. Once it's nice and thick, it's ready to serve over waffles.
It's a little bit sweet but not very. Especially in comparison to syrup. I like it in winter as a nice, hot, rib-sticking meal.
*Basically I'm a sauce girl at heart. Gravy (especially white/country gravy), waffle sauce, ketchup, pasta sauces--too much is just about the right serving size for me.
