moving forward
Jan. 28th, 2008 02:42 pmAs I posted in great detail at the time, in fall it was time to have my beloved dog put to sleep.
I've been thinking off and on about whether and when to get another dog. Actually it's more when than whether. I think I'm just about ready.
I've settled on a Finnish Spitz. They're in the same general family as the American Eskimo Dog, which is what Sheba was, but a little bit bigger. I had actually been considering Finkies when I got Sheba, but they were above the size limit for the apartment I was living in at the time. Now that I don't have to worry about a size limit, I'm looking at the FS again.
They are not, however, a terribly prevalent breed--especially as compared to the American Eskimo Dogs. I've sent in an application to Finnish Spitz Rescue and am in the process of trying to make connections with them (I keep getting a "full mailbox" message when I call). While I keep working to get on their radar, I think I'll also be seeing about making contact with various breeders to see if I can sorta get my name out there as someone looking for a pooch. I'd rather adopt a rescue than a puppy (puppies are great, and I might do it, but I think an adult is the better course of action for me).
So, anyway, that's where I am right now: at "dog search activated." If any dog people out there happen to know of any Finnish Spitzes looking for a placement, there's at least one person in the midwest with a place for her/him. I'm taking the attitude that when the time is right, the right dog will be there.
