Fanworks roundup

So I thought, "what the hey, I'll do a roundup post this year."
1. The First Ten Years. I wrote this for
jacksamfriends. Historically I don't write a lot of Sam and this was a good nudge to stretch a little. Overall, I'm pretty happy with how it came out.
2. *crickets*
I did do a few "dvd commentaries" for some stories: Team's Night Out, Birthday, and Coming Home. That was an interesting exercise and a really good way to do some self evaluation and think about ways to improve.
To sum up: my muse is not dead, but she is on life support. A DNR order has not yet been issued and I hope she'll make a recovery in 2010. I have two or three half finished stories, including one for one_prompt (see next section). It's not that I don't want to finish them. I think they all have the potential to be quite good--though one of them has a rather silly premise. It's just that every time I sit down to work on them I wind up doing something else. I hope to wrap them up and create some closure this year.

In other fandom endeavors, I created a story community in 2010,
one_prompt. This is an SG-1 story community with one new prompt issued each quarter that all participants will write to. If I'd been thinking a little more quickly when I set up the community page, I would have named it sg_one_prompt. But the page was sort of set up by accident (I was testing out how to do it and suddenly, "whoops, there is was.") Oh well. traycer graciously agreed to help run this fledgling community and I couldn't ask for a better partner.
The first prompt received poor results. It seems that when one does no promotion, lack of participation follows. Who knew? The second prompt received more conscientious promotion and yielded some very nice submissions. Or people like
traycer_ better and therefore responded to her administration of that prompt. Whatever the case, the stories are well worth reading. Yay!
As of today, prompt #3 is in play. Everyone is welcome. Come and play!

For good or ill, I was a little more active in the vid field.
Sha're's Elegy. I'm really happy with this one. It's for Forever in a Day and uses Sarah McLachlan's performance of "Prayer of St. Francis of Assissi."
Dark Night of the Soul This is a vid for Abyss using the Loreena McKennett song "Dante's Prayer." In retrospect, I'm not sure if lyrically it was the best choice, but still think the song more or less sets the right mood. There are things that I see that I could do differently, and it is long, but overall I do like it.
By Way of Sorrow This is a rare non-SG-1 vid and possibly my favorite of any that I've done. It's for my first--and enduring--series love, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
General O'Neill Settles In I hate the title for this vid, but I never came up with anything that I hated any less. I like the vid though. It's for Zero Hour, with a sort of odd musical choice: "Concerning Hobbits" from the LoTR soundtrack.
(ETA: Most of my vids can be downloaded as avi or mp4 files (which should be viewable on PCs if you have Quicktime). Here's a link to a listing of links.)
And there it is. I hope to be more productive in 2010 and to grow in quality as well and quantity as time goes by.

Date: 2010-01-04 12:59 am (UTC)My main goal is to have a laid back place where people have time to be as ambitious or as fly-by-night as they want with a story idea. I hope it's something that people can have fun with.
