I'm contemplating setting up an account at AO3. I have a vague notion that there are some on my flist that are there. Do you like it?

Also currently debating the merits/demerits of having a different user name there. Mostly seeing demerits. Have also contemplated off and on changing my user name here. I've never been all that enamored with what I chose (after a whole 20 seconds of thought). But there's that whole thing of paying for it and then getting the change set. I would say that there's a 99% chance that ennui will carry the day.

I'm there! I liked how it seemed to be set up--that you could do chapter or show the whole fic at once (As writer and/or reader) and that it was multifandom without bares.

There's been some limits or small issues I've had in submitting fics, but any time I've had a question or problem, the support staff has been very friendly and helpful and I think at least one of my suggestions was taken into consideration for an update to the archive (not that I would be the only one who may have suggested it).

The one issue I've seen people taking issue with is the quasi-affiliation AO3 has with the OTW which is a more academic research concept for fandom created by fans. I can respect that choice, but I figure I'm already out on the internet anyway with fics. I'm not sure *why* anyone would want to study my silly fics (unless as gen outliers to the plethora of slash/het stories out there). But *shrugs* (I'm not a good one to explain their argument but you may be able to find more discussion if it's something you're concerned about).

Re: username. When you sign up, you can have a default name that can't be changed, but you can put in different usernames. So you can name yourself whatever you want and if you want the suzannemarie or smg names affiliated with stories as well, you can do that.

Someone on my flist has a penname for SG-1 fandom and a penname for SGA fandom (she uses the journals interchangeably) and she's got both listed under one default.

That pretty much jibes with the impression that I had about the place. I think I'll probably go ahead and take the plunge once the invite comes through.

The name thing: that's what I'm currently leaning toward doing. At this point, I've got enough stories under the suzannemarie moniker, it seems problematic to change course now.

Thanks for the input!

Oh! Wait!

I *have* an invite! Do you want it? I had requested one for someone a while back and then it turned out they got one from another person too.

Just let me know, and I can email it to you.

If yours isn't spoken for, I'll take it off your hands. Thanks!

FWIW I don't think the limited relationship between AO3 and OTW means anything as far as who can study what. Fic being on the internet without being under a lock makes it accessible for someone to use it in research regardless of whether its on A03 or ff.net, and someone doing human subject work will still need to go through proper channels with their research and get your permission even though OTW is loosely related to AO3. There's no kind of blanket release just by being on AO3 (my hope is that if someone starts trying to do research via AO3 the owners will hear about it and be able to act if it's not a legit request, but that has yet to be proven).

I like what I've seen of it so far, but I have the problem of having written in multiple fandoms and not wanting/being able to use ff.net to post them all in one place, so that's the benefit I get from AO3.

So far it seems pretty nifty. It's certainly very user friendly. To date, I'm liking what I've seen too.
