a lesser joy of spring

So, for the last few days I've been noticing quite a few wasps flying around my front porch area. I kept kinda looking all around the side of the building for a nest and not seeing one. Today at lunch I looked a little closer. It appears that the wasps are in the initial building stages of a new nest right outside my front door.

On the one hand, it's rather fascinating to observe. On the other hand, I would prefer that the fascinating event take place in location that's not within inches of my doorway and doesn't involve a flight path that goes over the flower garden that I'm looking forward to working in.

Gaaah!

Oh, good luck there! Something I do not miss about living OTC (outside the city): the bees and the wasps. Sneaky bastards. Just when you think you're safe, they dive bomb you. It's all: Lalala, no wasps here! I'll just run out to the garden, and THEN! Stingers of death race at you from the sky like that crop duster chasing after Cary Grant in "North by Northwest." Scary.

(Actually, I was only stung by a wasp-like creature once in my life, that I can remember, and yet I am irrationally afraid of them. It's odd.)

I've never been stung that I can recall. That hasn't stopped me from kinda wanting to drop everything and run at the site of wasp-like creatures.

Your fear is not irrational, and the "Don't bother them and they won't bother you" approach is unsound!!!

If you decide to do anything about it--like bomb it (chemically speaking), do it at night, or you know, dusk (really truly night would be too dark).
