I did my federal taxes this weekend. Oh what a difference having a mortgage for a full year can make. My refund is almost double what it was last year. I'll be able to pay for exciting things like:

-my car insurance in April
-my car tax in May
-getting my dog's teeth cleaned

*sigh* This is what it means to be an adult. You get a chunk of money and you spend it on things like that. Maybe I'll reserve a semi-fun thing for the rest of the money and have my hair person do lowlights on my hair again. I haven't done that in a long time, what with my extreme lack of disposable income.

Well that hardly seems fair. Are they trying to discourage home ownership?

I don't think they're trying to discourage it, so much as perhaps the assumption is that people who are in the market for home ownership already have a big financial leg-up on people who aren't, and so they save the tax breaks for the people who are more in-need, and pour that money we mortgage-holders aren't getting a break on, back into social services.

I guess it's just the Canadian way. I think it would be nice, in that it might make home ownership possible for more people who are just on the cusp of being able to afford it, but I guess I can see both sides of it.

Not that I still wouldn't love a large refund at tax time... but that really doesn't seem likely, given my untaxed freelance earnings, which I always just hope to balance out with my sad little pile of deductions (registered retirement plan contributions, charitable donations and this year, for the first time in a while, education costs!)
