So, I'm driving to my guitar lesson and see a cute puppy running free. (Looked like maybe a three or four month old lab.) He gets into the street and sees a pickup coming and realizes that maybe this isn't such a good idea and starts turning back. The pickup did slow down a little bit and swerve, but he still hit the pup. Three of us other drivers and two pedestrians in the vicinity managed to stop and try to see what we could do. He just kept going. Jerk.

Fortunately, I think it was just a glancing blow. The pup was half sitting, half lying and crying, but before any of could get to him he managed to get up. Then he limped and started trotting away at a pretty good pace--hopefully toward home. The guy in the car behind me and I were talking and we decided that it looked like he wasn't seriously injured so think he'll probably be okay. Hopefully nothing worse than just being sore for a few days. He had a collar, so he obviously had a home. I hope he'd just happened to make an escape and that he's not normally allowed to wander free. That's just irresponsible pet ownership if that's the case.

Poor puppy. I hope he's okay. And hopefully he learned his lesson about the dangers of streets.

oh. *sad*

also, if you ever DO see an animal hit by a car, or otherwise traumatized, one thing you can do to help it cope with the shock (which will often kill even if the injuries can be treated) until medical help arrives is to rub the dog's (or other animal's) ears gently - do long strokes from the base to the tip, kind of folding the ear together gently on the vertical. And rub right at the tips of the ear, too.
