You know, I think I'm just going to have to finally concede that the word ficlet only exists in my vocabulary as an abstract concept.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through my "ficlet" for Hammond Alphabet Soup. This was the one that was going to come in at under 1000 words.

*pfft* It's frikken novel! (I exaggerate some for effect.)

It's kinda different from most of the other stuff I've done and possibly to no one's tastes but mine. But I'm fond of the idea anyway, so we'll see how it turns out.

I think writers tend to sort of have "default" lengths that they just fall into using if the story doesn't demand they do otherwise. Maybe just because we all tend to favor certain types of stories and methods of story-telling, and those things tend to dictate the length of a fic more than our abstract wishes and word counts. My fics seem to mostly wash up in the 600-700 and the 1,100-13,000 categories. Getting anything longer or shorter is usually a struggle.

That makes sense. My own current style just doesn't lend itself to the shorter ficlets--to much of a compulsive need to have setups and ancillary information, I guess.
