WASHINGTON - The CIA and other U.S. intelligence agencies fell victim to false “group think” when assessing Iraq’s weapons capabilities and produced overstated or incorrect conclusions that led the Bush administration to justify the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, according to a scathing Senate Intelligence Committee report released Friday.
I was talking to my family a couple of months ago, and I commented how when I took introductory psych courses in college, the example for Group Think that was cited in all my textbooks was the Bay of Pigs. I went on to speculate that 15-20 years from now, the Bay of Pigs example may be supplanted by the decision to go to war in Iraq. I guess maybe there were some decision makers in the current government that didn't learn the lessons that JFK's Cuban adventure provided.
