Lately my five year old MacBook has started running really hot, really fast. And then it becomes less responsive to what I want it to do. I think it probably just needs a new fan. Which, I'm sure would cost something but is relatively simple I think. And yet, I can't stop thinking about a shiny new MacBook Pro instead. Because it would be all shiny! And new! And a completely irresponsible financial decision. But shiny! New! Those are two of my favorite words. I can already feel my resolve slipping.

Ohhhhh man, I'd been wrestling whether to buy an eReader or an iPad, then a client finally paid me and now I'm debating on whether to get a Macbook Air vs. Wintel netbook vs. iPad.

I'm afraid I'm no help in your decision! (Except that if your Macbook only needs a fan, then you're LUCKY.)

Yeah, I was asking general questions at one of the tech places today and the guy indicated that it might just be a fan, but that there were other hard drive possibilities too. Resolve continues to flee.

five years is actually ancient in tech years. I'd suspect getting a new one would be equal in cost (with the upgrades in tech you get) to replacing the fan.

I have recently come to/talked myself into that same conclusion. I do believe that there will be something shiny and new in my near future.
