A few days ago my dad and I finally got together to mount bookshelves on my walls. He owns the the power tools and the skill to wield them, so I needed him to help me. I made one of the bedrooms into a sort of library and last night I got all of my books out of boxes and on to shelves. It feels great to have those eleven boxes empty and off the floor. It's amazing how satisfying it feels to get that done.

Sure! Of course it took me a little over two months to arrange for him to come across town to take care of it. It might take a little longer to go out of state. :)

Isn't it amazing what a difference something like that makes? It feels so good when it's done and it comes out the way you hope. It's so nice to have a dad to help with things like that.

it is. and since i tackled a couple small things, it's given me the confidence to tackle something bigger. and since the big kitchen redo is on hold for a little longer, i am desperately feeling the need to do something that helps organize the house a little more.

It's amazing how much more fun these projects seem when you're doing them in your own place.

Kitchen projects are really challenging, but can be the most rewarding too. I hope you get to have the kitchen of your dreams soon.

my take on it is that it will happen when it is supposed to happen. until then, i'll make do with the cabinets i have and the lack of storage i'm finding myself with. but when it does finally happen, i'm plastering my LJ with pictures of blue cabinets and cookie jars.

cuz i forgot this in the first resonse i sent

also, this isn't my first house. my first house re-arranged my my father-in-law ans left a generally bad taste in my mouth. this house, he's not allowed to touch. its ours and he can't change it.

and that is what is moving me to home improvement...to make our house a home for years to come with the work of our own hands.

I know what you mean.

Over the course of many years my parents gradually remodeled the house I grew up in. It now looks nothing like the "spec house" that they bought 30+ years ago.

My mom made on off-hand, not serious comment about selling the house not so long ago. When I kinda looked at her she said it would break her heart to sell.

Aren't dads with tools the greatest? My place would be a complete (as opposed to partial, which it is) disaster area without my dad. Alas, he has been reassigned to the home front of late. Good slaves are so unreliable. Must get him back to help me put up new bathroom mirror and light.

Isn't it nice to get rid of the boxes? It's amazing how good it feels to break them down and throw them in the recycle bin. I envy you your library. I've had to reduce bookshelf space a bit and I've got the books double packed. It's ridiculous. And I've still got a couple of boxes to go.... I think I need to go the wall shelf route, too.

The instant de-clutter gratification is really nice. Plus the floor space that I've gained back. I'd love to have a full wall of built-in shelves. But since I don't know how to do that myself, and can't afford to pay for it, wall mounted shelves are good enough for now.

Congrats. When I first moved out here, my father drove cross country with me. He was completely shocked that by the time we went to sleep the first night, I was completely unpacked. hehehe

I'm a madman when it comes to that. I can't sleep until I've got it all set up. I did it again when I moved to this place, though, unfortunately, it was much smaller and I had to get rid of a lot of my stuff. I ended up with less to move though. I think I might just be good at looking at the room and knowing where the stuff is going to go in it, so when I take it out of the vehicle, it goes straight to where it is going to stay. (Now I'm thinking about a possible move again) The moving itself sucks though.
