I'm sitting in my living room last night, happily watching television, feeling mildly grumpy that I would be returning to the world of work the next day, when suddenly I notice what sounds like dripping. I go down into the basement and there's a puddle along one wall. I call my dad and neither of us can find any obvious leaks around sinks or toilets, so I'm guessing something's happening in the wall somewhere. So today I get to have a plumber come out to investigate. This is one of the aspects of being a grown-up that's less fun.

grrrr.

(hugs) I know the feeling. When the rats invaded, I so did not want to be the grown up who owned the house. :( I hope it's something easy to fix and not too expensive.

Thanks. I hope so too. Sometimes I think my parents set a bad example. They made it look like when you became an adult you become able to know what to do. I rarely feel like I know what to do. (I'm well into my 30s and mostly I still want to be able to call my dad and put it all in his hands.)

One good thing. As I was deciding how panicked to feel about money last night, I remembered that my mortgage requires me to put a small portion of money into an administered savings account which can be accessed for needed repairs. So if it's more than I can handle as part of my regular expenses, at least I've got a backup.

Upon further investigation, the answer seems to be crappy plumbing. He diagnosed it immediately as a leaky drainpipe behind the sink and got started pulling things away to get to it.

I never think it's a good sign when a professional pauses and says "hmmm." Turns out the whole bottom of the pipe is completely corroded away. Pulling it out and replacing it is going to involve taking the entire cabinet away from the wall. So he's going to have a carpenter come out this afternoon to take care of that. And put better quality piping in that won't corrode. Not the best news that I was hoping for, and not an expense that I wanted, but at least it's fixible.

I am in my early forties now and I still want to call my parents and ask for help. Of course my Dad is gone and my Mom is hopeless about that kind of thing, but the desire for parental help is still there.

that's a great thing that you have that account. Hopefully it's not needed.
