Anybody else watch Once Upon a Time? I am sufficiently intrigued to see what happens next. Very interesting premise.

I have taken the plunge. Because one thing the world doesn't have enough of is people blogging with no real purpose whatsover, I've created one for myself at wordpress.

Introductions and Beginnings, wherein I make my "hello people" post

Middle Earth and the joy of rereading, wherein I natter away about how much I like rereading books I love, and The Lord of the Rings in particular.

We'll see how committed I remain to keeping things up, but at the least it's an interesting experiment in thinking through what and how I want to write. I anticipate that it will be an evolving process.

So I saw the advertisements for Revenge in the weeks leading up to the new season, but they didn't entice me at all so I just ignored it. But then people on my flist started talking about how good it was. I remained skeptical because I didn't care for the preseason promos.

I finally broke down last night and watched the premier on OnDemand.

I retract my skepticism. It was really, really good and I can't wait to catch up on the episodes. (Yay OnDemand!) Good acting. Really interesting premise. Really intriguing start. I do wonder, if this makes it to a second season, do they keep the same protagonist and go forward with her life, or if they bring in a new avenger with a new cause?

: I'm choosing to blame you, since your post was the final tipping point. Or possibly thank you.

Any WordPress users on my flist? Likes or dislikes? Is it pretty easy and straightforward to use?

Lately I've been contemplating starting up a personal blog. Mostly to natter on to myself my deep thoughts about inconsequential topics like sports or my dog or tv or... stuff. Basically stuff that I could be doing just as easily here but somehow... don't.

I have no expectation for any sort of following. Just thinking about playing around with something new and maybe seeing if I have the discipline to keep it up for more than, say, two entries.

"...but like a ninja of love, rappelling down from above
you snuck your way right into my heart."

The downside of watching one of my favorite episodes of Phineas and Ferb while I was at lunch is that I now have that song lyric stuck in my head. It's courtesy of Love Handel, Linda Flynn-Fletcher's favorite band from the 80s. Their hit song stayed at the top of the charts for 11 consecutive minutes.

Unfortunately pressures from a dwindling fan base eventually led to the band's demise.
Lines were drawn.
Then they were redrawn.
Eventually the lines were erased and the paper was crumpled up and thrown away.

Yesterday afternoon, I think it was in the midst of my boss and I both talking in some form about having the "don't wannas," I made the statement along the lines that being an adult just isn't much fun. Somebody else nodded. My boss offered emphatic agreement--going so far as to say the only good thing about is that you can order a drink if you want.

Another co-worker offered the rebuttal of "but you don't have to ask permission to do stuff." Which, frankly, didn't get a whole lot of traction at that point in the day.

Today, co-worker looked at me and said that she had thought of another good thing about being an adult. "You can have ice cream for dinner if you want."

Having actually had ice cream for dinner a couple of days ago, I do have to concede that point.

Time Magazine has a really interesting story about fanfic, The Boy Who Lived Forever. What's so refreshing about to me is that it's of a "let's gawk at the weird fan-type people out there" variety. It's a straightforward, thoughtful look at fanfic, who does it, why, and includes some interesting historical context as well.

*Was planning to spend the weekend buckling down to work on my [livejournal.com profile] sg1friendathon story. Unfortunately the seed of an idea that I had when I selected my prompt isn't germinating. This is not looking promising.

*Speaking ficathons and such, I've decided to do something a little different for the summer quarter over at [livejournal.com profile] one_prompt. We're doing a "catch-up" and putting all eight prompts that have been used so far up for adoption. I thought it might be fun to give people a chance who missed out on earlier prompts, or didn't get a story finished, or had an idea for a second story to dip their toes back into the pool. If you're an SG1 ficcer and looking for something to do this summer, come check us out.

*While I didn't work on my story this past weekend, I did laze around and continue on my journey through my dvds of one of my all-time favorite shows, Deep Space 9. I do love that show. And I love the kickass Major (now Colonel) Kira a little bit more each time I watch the series. Perfect? No. Awesome? Yes. Like last night when she faced down a number of Romulan war birds basically with attitude and a few outmanned Bajoran ships.

Hey, so, that [livejournal.com profile] sg1friendathon that I've been talking about? The master list of prompts has been compiled and are available for the taking. There is a plethora of interesting and available prompts to suit almost every fancy.

Wander on by and grab a prompt if you're looking for an SG-1 writing project for the summer.
smg01: (cliffs of insanity)
The prompts that have come in so far for the [livejournal.com profile] sg1friendathon are awesome. I can't wait until we get them all compiled and ready for adoption. But there's always room for more, so you have prompt ideas that you haven't submitted yet, trot on over here and play along. A master list will be unveiled later this week for people to make their selections.

In other story news, I had really and truly planned to use the long weekend to tackle a lingering WIP that would make a good fit for this round's prompt at [livejournal.com profile] one_prompt. Somehow, though, I was never able to settle down to it. It looks like yet another story round in my own community is going to go by without a contribution from me. I'm not sure I'm ever going to get that mojo back. *sigh*

Do you like SG-1? Do you like writing prompts? Do you like gen? Then do I have the place for you.

Prompts are open at [livejournal.com profile] sg1friendathon.

Come toss some prompts our way. Suggesting prompts in no way obligates you to write a fic. Though we certainly hope that once the prompts are made available you are intrigued enough to take one home with you.

First things first, though. Come give us some prompts so we can get this ficathon off to a running start. And feel free to share the link with others who you think will be interested.

See you at the Friendathon!

Once upon a time (back in 2008) the lovely and inimitable [livejournal.com profile] sg_fignewton conceived of a fun ficathon, [livejournal.com profile] sg1friendathon. Enough time has passed for all of us to forget the stress of writing to that particular deadline, so the time has come to resurrect it. (The ficathon, I mean, not the stress. Stress Anticipation is a mere byproduct.) Toward that end, [livejournal.com profile] sg_fignewton has created a poll to gauge interest and come up with some timing guidelines. Go here for information, to submit your votes, and to offer any other feedback.

Oh, yeah. I'm on board as a co-moderator for this happy little endeavor. This is a sign that either Fig has lost her mind for offering it to me, or I've lost my mind for jumping eagerly on board. I leave it to you to decide this for yourself.

The SG-1 Friendathon is for gen only stories. It's a chance to celebrate the deep friendships among the varied and various characters of SG-1. And it's a heck of a lot of fun. The series may be long over, but that doesn't mean that there aren't stories yet to be written.

Come join the fun!

A friend is working on a paper on LJ and Facebook for a conference and is looking for some survey participants: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JV3CY3V. I can vouch that she's legit, you will not be required to provide any personal information, and it's painless to complete.

You'll be doing your part for academia. :)

One of my favorite shows ever is WKRP in Cincinatti. For some reason, today I started thinking about the scene where Venus teaches a potential high school dropout about the atom. It's one of my favorite scenes ever and I was happy to see that someone posted it on youtube.

I heard from two widely disparate sources what an awful show Body of Proof was. Overwhelmed by curiosity, I just watched it on OnDemand. It may, in fact, be one of the most ridiculously wretched episodes of television that I've ever watched.

The thing about watching A) a lot of DiscoveryID and B) Dr G: Medical Examiner is that you watch a show like Body of Proof and say over and over "What? That's not how it works." The show may lack verisimilitude, but at least it has unappealing characters.

Can you tell that I agree with ones who evaluated it as bad?

Apologies to anyone who may have watched it and liked it. I found it remarkable for all the wrong reasons.

Lately my five year old MacBook has started running really hot, really fast. And then it becomes less responsive to what I want it to do. I think it probably just needs a new fan. Which, I'm sure would cost something but is relatively simple I think. And yet, I can't stop thinking about a shiny new MacBook Pro instead. Because it would be all shiny! And new! And a completely irresponsible financial decision. But shiny! New! Those are two of my favorite words. I can already feel my resolve slipping.

A writer at Baseball Prospectus wrote a debut article on the heretofore unaddressed topic of RPS writing for baseball. It's a fun little piece and the comments are quite entertaining. (I sent a tweet to her saying that it's always fun to watch people learn about fanfic and RPS for the first time.)

A couple of favorites from the comments:

-One person, responding to the "outrage" at a piece that strays from the nuts and bolts of stats and performance analysis wondered why the piece about which game Ferris Buhler attended didn't provoke that reaction.

-Another commenter noted that he could really get into baseball fanfiction if it was about the Cubs making one brilliant move after another. To which another commenter replied that that seemed more unrealistic than some of the situations described in the article. And a second person responded with can only be described as a flash fic about the Cubs making a series of decisions that lead them to the World Series title.
